2023 – 2024 WILL Empower Apprentices

WILL Empower is pleased to welcome its largest class of apprentices yet! Thirteen apprentices will make up the sixth class of the WILL Empower Apprenticeship Program that identifies, develops and launches the next generation of women and non-binary staff members for the worker justice movement.

WILL Empower apprentices work as paid staff members in host sites across the country doing policy, communications, organizing, member mobilization and more.  Each apprentice has two mentors, one from their host and one from another movement organization.

Nearly 50 women and non-binary people have now been part of the apprenticeship program, and have benefitted from the guidance of more than 80 mentors.  The program is now nationwide, with a presence in 13 states.

“WILL Empower is very open and welcoming to under-represented people, and does a great job building leadership within a field where if you’re not a straight white man, there may not be a lot of leaders like you,” said Eduarda Serafim, who went on from her apprenticeship at Jobs with Justice to become the Solidarity Organizer at DC Jobs with Justice. “I also liked having a cohort and being part of an organization that valued mentoring.”

2023 host sites include the Communications Workers of America (CWA), Rutgers Adjunct Union / AAUP, Caring Across Generations, the Teamsters, MO Jobs with Justice, the Advancing Black Strategists Initiative, Jobs with Justice, National Black Workers’ Center, Workers’ Rights Consortium, Racine Educators United / NEA, and the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown University.
